Director, Health Safety and Environmental

Job Summary

TraPac is a leading marine container terminal operator in the ports of Los Angeles and Oakland California.  The company is completing major expansion projects at both terminals and wishes to change and improve our approach to health, safety and the environment, to move from full compliance to environmental excellence.

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director, Health Safety and Environmental will provide leadership and strategic direction for both Los Angeles and Oakland, California. Will act as a manager and coach in leading the company within a matrix organization. Responsible for changing the safety culture to a visibly felt leadership program, which will have demonstrable results in management and trade union engagement, vendor performance, a reduction in lost time incidents, near misses and incident severity. Will bring experience of best practice and a willingness to use key performance indicators and benchmarks. Will engage directly with external regulators and stakeholders, including the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Oakland, United States Coast Guard, Occupational Health and Safety Administration, State and Federal bodies.  

Job Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field.

Minimum 5 years in HSE leadership role

Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) – preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of state, federal and local HSE regulations. 

Direct experience dealing with regulatory agencies and compliance officers.

Knowledge of industrial and/or union labor working environment preferred.

Strong understanding of emergency management and business continuity.

Superior leadership, presentation, negotiation and communication skills.

Proficient skills in MS-Office suite of programs.
